SALLY VAN IN CRISIS?

By Rev Denis.

This year we have tried to run Sally Van outreach for young people in Halesworth each Saturday night. The aim is to provide a safe, warm and welcoming place for them to come and hang loose together. We have provided food and drink for them and they have told us how good it has been. But we are in trouble with being able to sustain the activities at this level because we are really short of helpers.

Most Saturday nights around twenty to thirty young folk come through the hall door. Most Saturday nights we average only three helpers! Now we need to make toast in copious quantities, coffee in large mugs and tea and cool drinks need to be dispensed and the angels of the kitchen also need ot wash up and at the end the hall needs to be vacuum cleaned too.

This means that we are not meeting the objective of telling them about being Christians and what the church is all about. Surprisingly in similar works in other towns, there has been an amazing discovery that these young folk really relate to older folk from the congregation who are like loving grandparents. Now this does not let the younger ones out of the picture at all as these young folk also need to relate to people closer to their own birth year; so can YOU help?

We have reluctantly had to scale down this ministry to every second Saturday night as we do not have enough Christian helpers to be open every Saturday night. We are praying and trusting God to move more of our congregation to help us “Make Jesus known.” Is God calling you dear Halesworth Christian of any denomination to get involved in helping to be there for these teens and early twenties? Is God calling you to just be there for the long haul of changing their lives and incidentally yours as you take their yoke upon you with Jesus walking alongside? We have a vision of our church arising and taking on this work so that in 2012, we will be available for them every Saturday night again.

If you can help, please contact Douglas Mizon on 01986 872630 as soon as possible. Our suggested programme is shown below.

We are called to be children of God, and as a part of His church we are commanded to love and encourage each other. We believe we must obey Jesus Christ's command to proclaim His Gospel to all the world.
